Cerebral microbleeds (MBs) are small chronic brain hemorrhages which are likely caused by structural abnormalities of the small vessels of the brain. Owing to the paramagnetic properties of blood degradation products, MBs can be detected in vivo by using specific magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences.

One area where there is a major advantage in a tailored protocol, (see previous page) is in the area of hemosiderin staining. Hemosiderin is a stain, left behind after a brain bleed, even after though the blood is reabsorbed into the blood system. Hemosiderin deposition in the brain as footprint of high-altitude cerebral edema MHs detectable by susceptibility-weighted MRI predominantly in the splenium of the CC are long-lasting footprints of HACE. MHs detectable by susceptibility-weighted MRI predominantly in the splenium of the CC are long-lasting footprints of HACE. Susceptibility-weighted MRI in the axial plane showed extensive hemosiderin deposition on the facies cerebralis (solid arrows), consistent with superficial hemosiderosis, numerous microhaemorrhages in the brain parenchyma (dotted arrow), most of these subcortically in the left hemisphere. Objective: Based on recent findings of microhemorrhages (MHs) in the corpus callosum (CC) in 3 individuals after nonfatal high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), we hypothesized that hemosiderin depositions in the brain after high-altitude exposure are specific for HACE and remain detectable over many years. Hemosiderin deposition in the brain is seen after bleeds from any source, including chronic subdural hemorrhage, Cerebral arteriovenous malformations, cavernous hemangiomata.

Hemosiderin staining appears as yellow or brown stains on your body when iron is stored Superficial siderosis of the CNS is an uncommon condition clinically characterized by progressive sensorineural deafness, cerebellar ataxia, and pyramidal syndrome due to hemosiderin deposition in the subpial layers of the brain, spinal cord, and cranial nerves, especially the second and eighth (Fearnley et al., 1995).

T2-weighted images show marginal hypointensity corresponding to hemosiderin deposition. Furthermore, the more advanced iron-sensitive MRI techniques, T2*-gradient recalled echo and susceptibility-weighted imaging, can be used to detect the deposition more clearly as a characteristic susceptibility-weighted imaging hypointense outlining of the brain surface ( Charidimou et al., 2015 ) ( Fig. 8.6 ).

Hemosiderin deposition in the brain as footprint of high-altitude cerebral edema ABSTRACT Objective: Based on recent findings of microhemorrhages (MHs) in the corpus callosum (CC) in In brain disease research, prior subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has been diagnosed by investigating subarachnoid hemosiderin deposition using T2*-weighted MRI method [22]. Local forms distinguish disease (cutaneous and pulmonary hemosiderosis) and general (hemosiderin deposition in liver cells, spleen, kidney, bone marrow, salivary and sweat glands). Hemosiderosis Diagnosis is based on the determination of iron content in the blood plasma, total iron-binding capacity of the blood, as well as the pigment content in biopsy tissues and organs.
